VOTE MORE for UFT Leadership

The UFT Elections are NOW!

UFT members have a choice for new officers, and MORE believes that this choice can make a difference.  The Movement of Rank and File Educators believes the teachers union can and should be the fighting force to defend public education for all students.  In the classroom we will fight for small class sizes, rich curriculum, push back on the testing regime and an end of harassment and incessant paperwork.  Outside the classroom we will demand a fair contract and democratic governance of our schools instead of simply waiting for a new mayor.  We will partner with parents, communities and other unions because we understand that our working conditions are our students’ learning conditions, and together we can make a difference.

Ballots are mailed out April 3 and are due back April 24 by mail.

We urge you and all UFT members you know to vote for a positive leadership for our UFT.  In past elections less than a quarter of the active UFT membership voted for their leadership.  Please spread the word to Get Out the Vote and vote in a positive alternative leadership.

Vote MORE!

Demand MORE from the UFT.

No more waiting, no more concessions to billionaire mayors and his corporate reform agenda that ignores the needs of students, teachers and communities.  Together let’s build a movement to fight for the quality public education that every students deserves!

“In the last ten years, in a departure from the roots of our union’s founding, the leadership has failed to organize and mobilize the membership at the time we have needed their leadership the most. The tidal wave of unprecedented attacks on our profession, our schools and our children will not stop with a new mayor. It is time for change. It is time we demand MORE from our union.” -Julie Cavanagh, MORE’s candidate for UFT president

  1. I’m a retired NYC teacher. MORE must advance the following in order to win the election. 1. Lower class sizes 2. 600 school placement for disruptive pupils. Work-study programs for older problem children. 3. The ending of the Leadership Academy. How can people who never taught evaluate and rate teachers? This is absurd. 4. Restoration of sabbaticals. 5. Restoration of the seniority transfer system. 6. Getting ATR’s back into the classroom. UNITY CAUCUS has failed us miserably. We must demand term- limits for union officials. After their terms end, they must go back to teaching for at least 5 years and work under the conditions they have negotiated. Your slogan should be MORE shall not be less in NYC schools. The favor of a reply would be appreciated. Very truly yours, Ed M. Greenspan, retired NYC teacher 33 years. B.A., M.S., Brooklyn College I taught for 19 years at IS 320 in District 17 and IS 228 in District 21 for the remainder of my career.

    1. I basically agree. Esp w. points 3,5, and 6. Plus term limits: YEAH, BABY.
I’d prioritize restoring the seniority system. Much of the evil we see happening to teachers today can be traced to that seemingly innocuous maneuver in 2005 (?).

No I don’t speak for MORE. And I think we could have been more explicit and specific on some issues. (I’m voting and supporting MORE, however.)

  2. New Flier: Two Visions of Unionism

Plus: Common Core and Danielson’s constipated pedagogy are identified by name.

Minus: The check mark on the MORE side has got to go. Unless I’m misinformed, ballots so marked will not be counted. People have to mark the ballot w. an X. Maybe we can get a better visual up?

    We’re getting there.

  3. Just had the opportunity to catch up with blogs, news, emails etc. yes UFT election season is here, be careful what you wish for. Got to read an article in last Thursday NY Post. I was rather dismayed to see the Post reporting that Mulgrew was a chicken based on MORE’s request to debate. REALLY. MORE?? How can you resort to a rag that constantly bashes NYC teacher? I vote. You should vote. VOTE. UNITY. CHECK THE BOX!!!!

    1. Unity tools answer the following questions
Why does Mulgrew refuse to debate our candidate?
Why has Unity/New Action signed on to common core?
Why has Unity/New Action Randi agreed to Merit Pay?
Why has Unity/New Action signed on to Danielson
Why has Unity/New Action signed on to mayoral control?
Why has Unity/New Action allowed us to go without a contract since 2009?
Why has Unity/New Action allowed schools to close without even showing up to PEPs
Why has Unity/New Action decided to run it’s own charter school?
Why has Unity/New Action refused to back the living wage legislation?
Why has Unity/New Action not mobilized rallies and numbers of rank and file to support ATU. CWA, UWUA, or CTU?

You should all be ashamed of yourself allowing our children to be sold out, over-tested, and underfunded- while you have a seat at the table. you should be embarrassed to look in the mirror allowing ATRs to be bounced from school to school each week while class sizes have swelled.
You should be spend your time defending untenured teachers who are denied protections without reasons and defend those great teachers who are U rated because they speak up. how do you allow whistleblowers to spend 400 days in the “non-existent” rubber rooms. You have chutzpa to spend your time on the net while your leadership that buys you free dinners and hotel rooms allows our childrens’ public education to be sold out to the highest bidder
