File a Step 1 Grievance

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the online grievance process is suspended. You are encouraged to attempt informal resolutions in the meantime. If you have any questions, please contact the UFT at 212-331-6311.


UFT chapter leaders who attempted to defend their members’ rights by filing a grievance got a rude awakening. When logging in to the grievance portal they saw the message above. While the employer has used the COVID-19 contract to step up micromanagement, and eliminate vacation days, the UFT has made it more difficult to defend our contractual rights. 

We fully understand that UFT District Representatives and staff should maintain social distancing and work from home. But just as members are working from home, teaching classes and providing services to students and to the schools, the UFT could quite easily handle grievances remotely. Encouraging chapter leaders to “attempt informal resolutions” only works if the principal is cooperative and interested in resolution. But grievances are often filed when the administration is unwilling to compromise. 

MORE has called upon the UFT to negotiate an additional set of rules to protect members during remote learning. In the meantime, we urge the union to reopen the grievance procedure so that we can at least protect the rights that we have. And we urge UFT members to contact the UFT and tell them we want to maintain our right to file grievances during the period of remote instruction.
