All across New York State, millions of people across our communities and in our congregations are wrestling with COVID-19. We know first hand the impact this has had on our classrooms and our students. As we struggle to plan for the fall, with some form of digital learning nearly sure to continue, NY’s housing crisis always is at the back of our mind. Our students who face housing insecurity are unable to learn. The housing crisis has real, measurable impacts on our ability to do our jobs and it has lifelong impacts on our students.
As New York grapples with the catastrophic effects of both COVID-19 and the undeniable negative impact of systemic inequity, we, a group of dedicated educators, call upon our leaders in state government to hold true to their pledge to protect and advance the interests of those too often left behind.
Because there is no education justice without housing justice and security, we call upon our leaders to pass these 3 critically important bills:
—–> Emergency Housing Stability and Displacement Prevention Act (Myrie S8667/Reyes A10827), which would place a year long moratorium on evictions and foreclosures,
—–> Rent and Mortgage Cancellation Act of 2020 (Salazar S8802/Niou A10826), which would clear back rent for tenants and provide relief to mom-and-pop and non-profit landlords, as well as public housing authorities, and
—–> Housing Access Voucher Program (Kavanagh S7628A/ Cymbrowitz A9657), which would provide urgent rent support for New Yorkers experiencing homelessness and chronic housing insecurity.
Please join us in calling on Governor Andrew Cuomo, Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart Cousins, and Speaker Carl Heastie to pass these urgent pieces of legislation by filling out the form below. You can real our full letter here:
