RESOLUTION ON TAX THE RICH, INVEST IN OUR NY
WHEREAS, New York State faces a deficit of almost $60 billion over the next 4 years, and
WHEREAS, without immediate action, millions will face evictions, homelessness and food insecurity. Public school budgets will be decimated, and
WHEREAS, New York State’s 120 billionaires saw their combined net worth rise $77.3 billion in the early months of the pandemic, and
WHEREAS, New York State has a regressive tax structure where the top 5% of income-earners pay less in taxes as a percentage of their income than New York City teachers, and
WHEREAS, according to a NYSUT poll, 90% of New Yorkers favor taxing the rich before cutting public services, and
WHEREAS, NYSUT launched an ad campaign early in 2020 calling for new taxes on the ultra wealthy, and
WHEREAS NYS needs at least $50 billion in additional revenues annually to offset decades of austerity, and
WHEREAS, study after study has shown that the wealthy do not leave a state when the tax rate changes, therefore be it
RESOLVED, the UFT will join the Professional Staff Congress, District Council 37 and a host of community and state-wide organizations in supporting the Invest in Our NY coalition https://investinourny.org/ which aims to push New York State to raise $50-70 billion annually in new revenue from the wealthiest New Yorkers, and be it further
RESOLVED that raised revenue must be aimed at essential services including the $3.9 billion owed to our public schools under the Campaign for Fiscal Equity court decision of 2006 that has still not been enforced, and be it further
RESOLVED, that the UFT educate and mobilize our membership and parent allies to support the Invest in Our NY coalition in grassroots lobbying efforts and protest actions this spring, and be it further
RESOLVED, that to that end, the UFT encourage each of our chapters, district representatives and divisional committees to hold one meeting this February where part of the agenda is dedicated to educating members about the urgency of raising revenue from the wealthiest New Yorkers and how to take action to make it a reality.
